Olympics National stadium designed by Kengo Kuma opens in Tokyo. The newly completed venue was formally unveiled at a ceremony attended by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the renowned architect behind the project, Kengo Kuma. It will also be used for soccer matches and various track-and-field events during the Games. The stadium's roof was constructed using steel and latticed wood. Kuma, who is known for his use of natural materials, said he turned to traditional Japanese architecture and the environment for inspiration. His oval-shaped design features three tiers of seats beneath a partially covered roof made from steel and latticed wood. The architect sourced more than 70, cubic feet of timber -- from each of the country's 47 prefectures -- for the stadium. More than 47, trees have been planted in the vicinity of the new stadium.

Japan's native people, the Ainu, once hunted bears and fished for salmon in the wild forests of the country's far north, but today they are an ethnic minority fighting for their cultural survival. His Democratic Party of Japan has promised a kinder, gentler society after more than half a century of almost unbroken conservative rule, and the premier often speaks of his vision of a society shaped by "fraternity. The Ainu hope the new spirit of brotherhood will also apply to them as they continue to struggle with higher incidences of unemployment and poverty than the rest of Japan and lower levels of health and education. The new premier, days after his August 30 election win, met Tadashi Kato, chairman of the Ainu Association of Hokkaido, who urged the incoming government to establish a new Ainu law and boost measures to support his people.
